The Meditation Series My Son and I Are Doing for Better Mental Fitness

ree

I’ve been working with one of my kids on what you could call mental fitness, things like improved self-talk, staying focused, and feeling more productive. For a long time, I’ve been trying to get my kids to try a regular meditation practice, and I’m so happy that he finally found something that clicked for him.

Recently, I sent him a YouTube link to day one of a 21-day guided meditation series. It’s similar to the one that helped me build a consistent meditation habit years ago. Each session is about 20 minutes. It starts with Oprah Winfrey speaking, then Deepak Chopra takes over, gives you a daily mantra, and gently walks you into the practice. It’s calming, simple, and easy to follow. No pressure, no rules.

My son tried the first one and right away texted me asking for more. After a couple of days, he said he couldn’t believe how quickly he noticed a shift. He felt more aware of negative self-talk, more able to make a to-do list and actually complete the things on it, and more productive instead of stuck in his head.

So now he’s doing the series, and I decided to go through it too. I wanted to know exactly what he was listening to, and it has been just as grounding for me.

They say it takes 21 days to build a habit. When I first started meditating regularly, I did a series twice back to back, 42 days, and I was hooked. That was the beginning of the meditation practice I still have today. In fact, it eventually led me to the Chopra Center, where I became a certified meditation teacher.

If you want to try it, I’m including the link to day one below. You can search YouTube to find each of the 21 days individually. The theme is Getting Unstuck, which feels pretty universal these days, whether you’re 20, 50, 80, or somewhere in between. Check it out here!
