A Time-Capsule Gym with Ocean Breezes

We joined a true old-school gym right in the center of Bradley Beach, New Jersey for the month we’re here. We just wanted a place close by with weights… but I’ve never been in such a seriously intimidating, meathead-style gym. Everywhere you look there’s something… tons of free weights, tons of machines, and it’s spread across three stories. People here clearly love to lift. Some with massive muscles, and plenty who are in fantastic shape.
It’s called Jersey Shore Fitness Shop, and it’s family owned and operated since 1980. It actually started across the street as a one-room key-club-style gym before expanding into its current spot on Brinley Avenue. More than 40 years later, it’s still a staple at the Shore offering weightlifting, cardio, group classes, and personal training for locals and visitors alike.

Today was gorgeous, and the big front garage door and so many of the windows were wide open. A salty ocean breeze drifted through the whole place while people were working out… pretty amazing for a gym that’s been around this long.
For $58 for the month, I’ve already gotten my money’s worth and then some. I’ve been a bunch of times, even took a yoga class, and I’m just happy to keep moving. It’s a good reminder that when you’re away from home, you can still find a way to stay active… even if it’s in a place that feels like a time capsule with a whole lot of heart.
