When Charleston Surprised Us

We just took a quick trip to Charleston as part of driving cars north from Florida. We stayed two nights, and the best part was that our son Jake joined us. It was his first time in Charleston, so it was fun to show him around and explore together.
The only problem? Mother Nature had very different plans. The rain was relentless. We ended up getting stuck in a restaurant for three hours while flash flood warnings kept coming through. By the time we tried to head back, it took over an hour to get an Uber. And when we finally did, it felt like we were riding in a boat. At one point the water was so high around the car that I honestly wondered if it would start coming inside. Thankfully, it didn’t, but it was one of those moments where you realize you are truly at the mercy of the storm. And, of course, our friends in Charleston told us the skies cleared as soon as we left.
The other surprise? Spencer was there too. We had no idea our oldest was in Charleston the very same weekend and staying just a tenth of a mile from us. He was in town for a fantasy football draft with his fraternity brothers, and they pick a new city every year. It was his first time in Charleston too, and somehow our paths lined up. We only got an hour together, but it was such a gift to have two of our three boys with us in such an unexpected way.
That’s what I love most about adventuring. The plans never unfold exactly the way you think they will, and sometimes the best memories are the ones you could never have scripted.
