Testosterone… for the “Where Did the Word Go” Brain Fog Moments and Why Timing Matters

It surprised me to learn that losing words and brain fog can be connected to low testosterone. I had no idea… until my latest hormone check-in made it impossible to ignore.
Part of my appointments with my lifestyle doctor, who specializes in women’s health, is to complete a questionnaire the day before. She uses a questionnaire created by the Menopause Society and reviews my answers alongside my blood work. This time, the symptom of losing words stood out. When she compared my responses with my labs, she said I was borderline for needing testosterone. Typically they wait until someone is under a 10. I was an 11 out of 50.
I’m using a gel that comes through a mail order pharmacy. I apply a pea sized amount to my calf once a day at the same time every day. Simple… once you understand the timing.
Timing Matters
At first I put it on at night after my shower since you can’t shower within two hours of applying it. Big mistake. For two mornings in a row I woke up unbelievably groggy. When I googled it, everything pointed to testosterone gel causing grogginess when it’s applied too close to bedtime.
I switched the timing and the fog lifted immediately.
One thing I appreciate about trying the gel is that it’s flexible. If I don’t like how I feel, I can stop and it clears quickly. Pellets and longer acting forms don’t offer that same flexibility, so this felt like a comfortable way to test how my body responds.
My only challenge now is finding a consistent time to apply it. Since I don’t shower at the same time every day, I’m still working on a rhythm that will stick. If you have a tip for that, I’d love to hear it.
Midlife is about learning our bodies again… and supporting them with intention so we can stay clear, confident and fully alive.
